Camping Log

Summer Camp 2015 - Melita Island

Melita Island is a 65 acre Boy Scout camp in Flat Head Lake Montana.

- The Trip to Camp

We left at 4:00am on a school bus to get there. It was a long 12 hour drive. Every 2 1/2 hours we stopped at a gas station for a break. At lunch we stopped and had sandwiches near the lake. This ride took us through Washington, Idaho, and some of Montana. Once you get to the dock, the only way to the island is by boat!

- Merit Badges

For the Rifleman merit badge, we got to shoot a .22 at targets and spinners. A few scouts earned dime club, which is hitting 5 shots close enough to be covered by a dime. During the fishing merit badge, we were taught how to use the different poles, bait, and tools. We got to fish on Flat Head Lake in boats and from shore. During hte Cooking merit badge we talked abou the different food groups and grilled burgers. For various water merit badges, you could water ski, canoe, or wind surf. At the Archery merit badge, you shot at targets and even made your own arrows!

- Fun at Camp

At camp you could do the "Polar Bear Plunge", jumping into the cold lake at 6:30am. If you did it 3 times, you earned a badge. Near the end of the week, the whole camp participated in the Highland Games. You could throw knives, axes, or shot put, toss cabers, or compete in a form of arm wrestling. During every lunch, we would sing a song. Before every breakfast and dinner, we would have a flag ceremony. WE slep in tents, had camp fires, and played games each night. During the closing camp fire, we retired at least 20 flags, sang songs, and did skits.

...And Back Again

The ride back was much of the same, except we were tired and dirty....but it was SO worth it!
