Align your Map with a Compass

Orient a map with its surroundings Step-by-Step

  • Step 1

Hold the compass on your hand and rotate the dial until N (north) lines up with the index Line. Disregard the magnetic needle for now.

  • Step 2

Place the Map on a flat surface. Make sure there are no ferrous materials close by that may interfere with your magnetic needle.

Place the compass on top of the map and align the edge of the compass base plate with the edge of the map. Make sure the direction arrow points to the top of the map.

  • Step 3

Do not touch the compass.

With the compass resting on top of the map, rotate the map (not the compass) until the compass magnetic needle lines up with magnetic north.

Your map is now aligned with its surroundings.
