Umptanum Creek

Departure: May 2
Return: May 3
Total Nights: 1
Distance: 3.5 Miles (one way)
Elevation Change: ~300 ft.

The Umptanum creek is near Ellensgburg in the east side of the Cascades. The trailhead starts at the Yakima River about 10 miles south of Ellensburg. To get to the trail we had to cross the river on a suspended bridge and then cross the railroad tracks.

This was a relatively easy hike since there was very little elevation change on the trail. The trail itself follows the canyon floor and crosses the creek several times. At times the trail was overgrown with vegetation and we had to push our way through.

Once we got to the end of the trail we setup camp and started to explore the surroundings. Some opted to hike up the steep sides of the canyon to admire the great views from high above. This climb was a bit challenging since the grade was very steep and there was no trail leading to the top.

Later on the day, some went to the creek looking for crawdads and returned just in time for dinner. That night, we had gourmet meals such as Top Ramen with Crawdads and Mac and Cheese with Crawdads… yum!

All in all this was an enjoyable hike with many things to explore in the canyon ranging from wildlife viewing, climbing and a good time camping with friends.
